An autopsy on the body of 26-year-old Kenyan police officer Samuel Kaetuai has confirmed that he died from a single gunshot wound. Kaetuai was shot dead in Haiti while serving in a peacekeeping mission.
The postmortem was conducted on Tuesday, March 11, at Chiromo Funeral Parlour in Nairobi. According to the pathologist, the officer died due to heavy bleeding caused by the gunshot, which penetrated his head.
Kaetuai’s body was repatriated to Kenya on Monday evening after a two-week wait. His family, who had been anxiously waiting, finally got the chance to identify him.
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, a group of police officers received the fallen officer’s body. Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, along with Kaetuai’s family members, including his wife and father, Salaash Kaetuai, were also present at the airport.
While the exact burial date is yet to be confirmed, his body will remain at Chiromo Mortuary as burial preparations continue.

Kaetuai was killed during a police operation in the Western Artibonite region, about 92 kilometers north of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. He was among Kenyan police officers deployed to fight criminal gangs in the Caribbean nation.
On February 24, Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission commander Godfrey Otunge told the press that Kaetuai was airlifted to a hospital in Haiti after the shooting but later succumbed to his injuries.
In a show of support, Inspector General of the National Police Service Douglas Kanja and other senior officers visited Kaetuai’s family in Naserian Village, Kajiado County, to offer condolences.
Kenyan forces have been leading the MSS mission in Haiti since June 2024 to help control violent gangs. Despite facing challenges such as limited equipment, Kaetuai’s death marks the first casualty among the Kenyan contingent in the mission.
