Bloodbath in Haiti : Kenyan Cop Gunned Down as US Envoy Mourns Tragic Loss
United States Ambassador to Nairobi, Marc Dillard, has expressed his condolences following the tragic death of a Kenyan police officer in Haiti.
In a tweet posted on Tuesday, February 25, Dillard acknowledged the officerโs service in the Multinational Security Support Mission, which is working to curb lawlessness in the Caribbean nation. He also sent a message of support to the bereaved family, recognizing their loss.
The diplomat praised Kenyan troops for their dedication in combating gang dominance and restoring stability in Haiti.
โOn behalf of the U.S. Embassy, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of the Kenyan police officer who lost his life while striving to improve security for the Haitian people as part of the Multinational Security Support Mission. The U.S. is grateful for the brave Kenyan officers risking their lives to make the world safer,โ Dillard stated.
When Was the Kenyan Officer Killed in Haiti?
Kenyan forces commander in Haiti, Godfrey Otunge, confirmed that the officer was fatally shot on Sunday, February 23, in the Artibonite region during an operation.
Otunge reported that the officer was airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. Kenyaโs Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Korir SingโOei, assured that a detailed statement on the incident would be released.

This marks the first fatality involving a Kenyan officer since Kenya took charge of the UN-backed mission to combat criminal gangs and restore order in Haiti. The initial batch of Kenyan troops arrived in the country on June 25, 2024, to support the to the hospital, where he, unfortunately, succumbed. His family has been notified. The Service extends its deepest sympathies to the officerโs loved ones and remains committed to supporting them through this difficult time,โ the NPS said in a statement.
Kenya continues to lead the multinational peacekeeping mission in Haiti, working alongside the Haiti National Police (HNP) to restore stability. Despite the loss, authorities reaffirmed their dedication to the mission and commended the Kenyan officers in Haiti for their unwavering commitment.
