World record holder Beatrice Chebet made history by securing Kenya’s first-ever gold medal in the women’s 10,000 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday night.

Chebet executed a strategic race, finishing in 30 minutes and 43.25 seconds. She edged out Italy’s Nadia Batocletti, who claimed silver with a time of 30:43.35, and Ethiopian-born Dutch runner Sifan Hassan, who took bronze with a time of 30:44.12.

Sifan Hassan had previously won a gold medal at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which took place in 2021.

Kenya’s win in the 10,000 meters was a landmark achievement, marking the country’s first medal in this event since it was introduced to the Olympics at the 1988 Seoul Games.
