Beatrice Chebet Makes History with Gold in Women’s 10,000 Metres at 2024 Paris Olympics
World record holder Beatrice Chebet made history by securing Kenya’s first-ever gold medal in the women’s 10,000 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday night.
Chebet executed a strategic race, finishing in 30 minutes and 43.25 seconds. She edged out Italy’s Nadia Batocletti, who claimed silver with a time of 30:43.35, and Ethiopian-born Dutch runner Sifan Hassan, who took bronze with a time of 30:44.12.
Sifan Hassan had previously won a gold medal at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which took place in 2021.
Kenya’s win in the 10,000 meters was a landmark achievement, marking the country’s first medal in this event since it was introduced to the Olympics at the 1988 Seoul Games.

Margaret Chelimo of Kenya finished in fourth place with a time of 30:44.58, followed by Lilian Kasait in fifth with 30:45.04.
Ethiopia’s Guday Tsegay crossed the line sixth with a time of 30:45.21, while her fellow Ethiopian, Fotyen Tesfay, came in seventh with a time of 30:46.93.
At 24 years old, Chebet clinched her second gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. Her first gold came in a fiercely contested women’s 5,000m final on Monday night, where Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon secured silver amid significant physical challenges from Gudaf.
On May 25, 2024, Chebet set a world record with a time of 25:54.14 in the 10,000 meters at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League Meeting in Oregon, USA.
