Babu Owino Statement After Skipping Gachagua Impeachment in Parliament
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, formerly known as Paul Ongili, has finally spoken out regarding the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
After staying silent, Babu explained that he considered the entire impeachment process a waste of time. Although his fellow legislators turned up in large numbers, with 281 voting in favor of the motion, Babu expressed that his priorities were elsewhere.
The MP emphasized that lawmakers should be focusing on more pressing matters, such as the proposed takeover of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by Adani Holdings Group and the escalating cost of living in Kenya.
He further highlighted the need for attention on crucial topics like the education funding models and the skyrocketing youth unemployment rate across the country.
“How can I waste my whole day talking about Rigathi when we have more serious issues like Adani, the new university funding model, Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), high taxation, unemployment, and more?” Babu questioned.

The outspoken MP clarified that he would continue to skip parliamentary sessions that focus on trivial matters, reserving his presence for significant discussions that directly impact the country.
During the impeachment debate, Owino stated that he used the time to address important issues concerning his constituency, which is why he was absent from the session.
Babu Owino urged other MPs to demonstrate the same level of urgency in addressing Kenyans’ concerns as they did during the impeachment of Deputy President Gachagua.
“You’ll see me in Parliament when they bring up important issues, but they won’t. I was fully occupied with matters that were vital to my constituents. The same speed used to impeach Rigathi should be applied to solving the challenges facing Kenyans,” he added.
Babu Owino was among the lawmakers who chose not to participate in the voting process, alongside Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, whose silence throughout the proceedings left many Kenyans puzzled.
Deputy President Gachagua’s future now remains uncertain, following the overwhelming 281 votes in favor of his impeachment, with only 44 MPs opposing the motion and one abstaining from the vote.
