Babu Owino Speaks on Relationship With Raila After Declaring Himself Opposition Leader
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino reaffirmed his allegiance to Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Friday, clarifying that their relationship remains intact despite his recent declaration of being the new opposition leader.
In an interview with TV47, the outspoken MP emphasized that while he aims to eventually succeed Raila, the former Prime Minister continues to be both his mentor and party leader.
Babu Owino mentioned that once Raila assumes the role of African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, he would officially take over as the opposition leader.
He stressed that his ambition to lead the opposition shouldn’t be hindered by concerns regarding his age or political experience.
โRaila has always been my political leader, and I hold him in high regard. I’ve worked with him and for him; he remains my leader,” Babu Owino clarified.
“Railaโs contributions to this nation are undeniable, and regardless of differing opinions, we cannot overlook the sacrifices he has made,” he added.

The MP further explained that declaring himself as the opposition leader is part of his preparations to eventually inherit the role from the ODM party leader.
He argued that experience isnโt determined by age but by the challenges one has overcome.
“Iโm 35 years old and have faced and solved many challenges, unlike others who may be older but have encountered fewer obstacles,” Owino remarked.
On July 10, Babu Owino announced himself as Kenya’s new opposition leader, asserting that he would carry forward Odinga’s mission of holding the government accountable, especially in light of its perceived shortcomings.
“I will maintain the role of opposition, ensuring checks and balances on this failing government, drawing from the doctrine of separation of powers as highlighted by Montesquieu in the 17th century,” he stated.
“Weโve agreed to give people the platform to voice their concerns so we can address the issues plaguing our country and find lasting solutions,” he added.
