Babu Owino Reveals Harrowing 3-Day Torture Post-Arrest at JKIA
First time since his arrest and subsequent release, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino detailed his ordeal at the hands of police officers on Sunday, July 23.
The lawmaker stated that he was subjected to inhuman treatment following his detention at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Tuesday, July 18.
He claimed that police personnel denied him food during the three days he was detained before charges were filed.
“I was restrained, blindfolded, and placed in the trunk of a Subaru. I was transported to the middle of nowhere and placed in three days of solitary confinement.
“During that time, I was denied food and access to my family and legal counsel,” he explained.
The lawmaker explained that he did not cleanse or drink during his three days in detention.
Babu Owino explained that if a member of parliament could be treated in such a manner, then ordinary Kenyans must be subjected to even more inhumane treatment.
The member of parliament insisted that he was innocent and that the only reason he was apprehended was for fighting for Kenyans’ rights.

The member of parliament for Embakasi East stated that despite being tortured, he remained unbowed and would continue anti-government protests.
“I am the voice of those without a voice. You can murder the messenger, but you cannot destroy the message. “I will continue to advocate for the oppressed,” he pledged.
He explained that his arrest and the apprehension of other opposition politicians would only serve to spark anti-government demonstrations.
The outspoken representative pledged to continue opposing the government until the cost of living and prices of essential goods were reduced.
Babu Owino further criticized the government for blaming Azimio leader Raila Odinga for the devastation of property and loss of life during protests.
“Raila did not instruct the police to use brutal force or extralegal means to muzzle the people,” he stated.
