Babu Owino: “From Today Henceforth, I am The Chief Opposition Leader”
Babu Owino, the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East, has proclaimed himself the unofficial leader of the opposition, opposing the existing norms and addressing what he views as political opportunism.
In a media interview on July 25, 2024, Owino, known for his controversial stance, criticized leaders of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) who recently joined government positions in the Cabinet. He accused them of putting personal interests ahead of the opposition’s goals.
โActually from today henceforth, I am the chief opposition leader, because there are so many jokes, doing rounds. There are so many people, who are in the opposition, who are now in bed with the government,โ Babu remarked.
Greedy and self-serving
Babu Owino did not mince his words, labeling the ODM defectors as โgreedyโ and โpower-hungryโ highlighting the disconnect between their actions and the core values of the opposition.
Owino disclosed that he was distancing himself from certain leaders and upholding the ODM party’s original choice to stay in the opposition.

Babu Owino, showing significant disappointment and sadness over the conduct of some party members, demonstrated a true concern for Kenya’s most vulnerable citizens and pledged to persist in advocating for their welfare.
Fight for Kenyans
Babu Owino backed the party’s position, emphasizing that he will persist in advocating for Kenya’s disadvantaged, especially impoverished children who lack access to education and healthcare.
โMy interest is to fight for Kenyans, it pains me to see a person who was a fellow member of parliament, joining the government. It pains me, to look back in Soweto slums, Kibera slums, to look back in the central region, Nyanza, Coast, and everywhere else, to see that child sent away because he lacks Ksh5000 to pay, for the schooling in a secondary school. I am so pained to see that child, who is stuck in hospital because they cannot be treated because they lack money,โ Babu noted.
