Azimio MP Patrick Makau Arrested for Mlolongo Protest Involvement
Patrick Makau, a member of parliament from Mavoko, was arrested on Thursday, July 13, for his alleged participation in the demonstrations on Wednesday.
The lawmaker verified over the phone with GossipA2Z that police picked him up from his home in Karen at 4:00 a.m. and transported him to the Nairobi Area Traffic Police Headquarters near the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Following a new wave of anti-government demonstrations against the rising expense of living, Mlolongo, which is part of the Mavoko Constituency, witnessed intense protests.
“I am struggling this morning. The MP told GossipA2Z, “They took me from my home at 4:00 a.m., and they have not yet told me what I did wrong.”
The detention of the second-term Wiper Party legislator occurred just hours after Interior CS Kithure Kindiki issued a stern warning, threatening to take firm action against the protest organizers and financiers.
Makau is the first leader to be arrested as a result of the new surge of protests that have threatened to destabilize the country’s ailing economy.

Government-aligned leaders have indicated that the coalition led by Azimio should be held accountable for the nationwide disorder.
Without providing evidence, Trade CS Moses Kuria accused MP Makau of orchestrating disturbances in Mlolongo in response to the government’s decision to evict illegal squatters from East Africa Portland land in Athi River.
The CS added that despite the objections, they would proceed with the plan, stating that the land had been reserved for the construction of the first Kenyan cargo airport.
During the protests, protesters obstructed a portion of the Nairobi Expressway and vandalized the barrier, halting traffic.
As protestors pelted passing vehicles with stones, motorists were compelled to use alternate routes.
Protesters and police engaged in running confrontations that resulted in destruction.
