Angry Ruiru Residents Hold Demos Over 3-Week Power Blackout

Wednesday, residents of the Ruiru Prisons area staged protests against a power outage that has persisted for over three weeks.

Residents blocked the road from Ruiru Prisons to Wataalam as they demanded that power be restored to their residences and businesses.

Residents have given Kenya Power until Thursday to restore power, failing which they will conduct even larger protests on Friday to express their discontent.

“We have given Kenya Power until tomorrow at 4 pm to restore power, failure to which we will hold massive maandamano on Friday until we get our right to power,” a landlady in the area said.

As reported by Citizen Digital, residents have been operating in the dark, particularly at night, since a transformer failure in the area cut power to their residences.

“It’s now three weeks in the dark. Kenya Power came, saw the problem but left without solving it. We thought they would fix the faulty transformer but they left without doing anything,” one of the residents said.

Their concerns were conveyed to the officials of Kiambu County, prompting Governor Kimani Wamatangi to visit the area.

Wamatangi pledged action, but the faulty transformer has not yet been completely repaired.

A few areas, including the Ruiru Prisons, have received power, but the majority of residents remain in the dark.

“Running our businesses has been impossible. We have fridges and coolers, how can these things work without power? Aren’t we Kenyans as well?” a trader in the area asked.

Residents now demand that Kenya Power take immediate action and restore power to their residences.

They have also requested that area leaders, including Governor Wamatangi, intervene and restore power to their facilities.
