A U.S.-based contractor overseeing the construction of the Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway spanning 440 kilometers will receive a 30-year mandate to manage the infrastructure.

Under an agreement inked between the company and the Kenyan Government, the administration led by President William Ruto will grant a 99-year land trust, including its road reserve.

Everstrong, an American-owned infrastructure asset manager, will spearhead the project, injecting USD 3.6 billion (equivalent to around Ksh 470 billion).

The Kenyan government will not contribute any funds to the project, with the U.S. firm expected to recover expenses through toll charges.

Trans-African Concessions (TRAC) will operate the toll road for three decades.

The expressway, a four-lane (2×2) dual carriageway, will link Nairobi and Mombasa cities.

According to the government, the project holds significant importance for Kenya and promises substantial economic growth along its route.

Those unable to afford toll charges will still have access to the existing road and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

The infrastructure is anticipated to mitigate fatal accidents, enhance connectivity, and minimize wildlife casualties.

In economic terms, the expressway will bolster the northern corridor and foster trade

Assurances have been made that project development is closely coordinated with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), private sector collaborators, and local communities.
