Ambassador Whitman Speaks Out After Trump’s Victory

Whitman’s statement aligns with rising calls from Kenyans demanding her resignation as the US ambassador to Kenya.

Ambassador Meg Whitman addressed Donald Trump’s recent victory as the 47th President of the United States in her latest statement.

Dated Wednesday, November 7, Whitman confirmed that she serves under the President’s request, emphasizing her commitment to continue in her role through Trump’s upcoming inauguration in January 2025.

“As with all U.S. ambassadors, I serve at the request of the President. The American people have decided, and a new President will take office in January. Meanwhile, my team and I remain focused on fostering our countries’ shared goals of prosperity, security, and upholding democratic values,” part of the statement reads.

Whitman highlighted the longstanding bond between Kenya and the US, which has deepened significantly over six decades, gaining extensive support from both nations.

“The U.S.-Kenya relationship has flourished over the last 60 years, backed by a broad coalition of political leaders in Washington and Nairobi. Our partnership has never been stronger, and I believe this momentum will persist,” she stated further.

Amidst this, some Kenyans have used the moment to amplify their calls for Whitman’s resignation as the US ambassador.

Trump’s victory has spurred the hashtag #ResignMegWhitman on X, with many Kenyans speculating on her potential recall under the incoming administration.

The public outcry stems from Whitman’s alleged interference in Kenya’s internal affairs and her overt support for President William Ruto.

Her close alliance with Ruto has prompted critics to dub him a “US puppet.”

Appointed US Ambassador to Kenya in 2022, Whitman’s nomination by President Joe Biden in December 2021 was confirmed by the US Senate on July 14, 2022.

She assumed her role and presented her credentials to former President Uhuru Kenyatta on August 5, 2022.

As the eighteenth US Ambassador to Kenya, she also became the first female to hold the post in over 20 years, since Prudence Bushnell’s appointment in 1999.
