Cabinet resolutions enacted on Monday require Kenyans to install Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) pipes and taps, which must be incorporated into building designs before approval.

State House stated in a Cabinet dispatch sent to Kenyans.co.ke that the proposal will be a requirement for all Affordable Housing program homes.

“The proposals will further encompass establishing common-user LPG import terminals, distributing subsidized LPG cylinders to low-income households, promoting the use of LPG in institutions, facilitated by partnerships with finance institutions,” the cabinet dispatch reads.

The modifications are part of a cabinet-approved domestic gas Growth Policy that aims to transition Kenyan households from using traditional fuels to LPG.

State House disclosed that the proposed interventions include the establishment of LPG import terminals for shared use, the distribution of subsidized cylinders to low-income households, and the promotion of LPG use in educational institutions and within Affordable Housing units.

Cabinet noted, in proposing, that 70 percent of Kenyans currently rely on inefficient and polluting biomass and petroleum for cooking.

According to the government, the proposals are intended to reduce consumer prices, increase transparency, and enhance public safety, thereby contributing to public health and environmental sustainability.

During the Cabinet meeting conducted at Kisumu State Lodge, the executive also decided to forgive a Ksh117 billion debt owed to the government by public sugar mills, pending parliamentary approval.

Consequently, the Treasury is working to waive tax penalties and interest within thirty days.

Within three months of the decision, the government is anticipated to announce when arrears will be paid to farmers.

In a month, the government is also anticipated to present guidelines for leasing five state-owned sugar mills.

President William Ruto chairs a Cabinet meeting at the Kisumu State Lodge on October 9, 2023.
