Alert: Tana River Border Counties Brace for Dam Outburst Flooding

Counties bordering the Tana River have been issued a warning to prepare for the possibility of flooding resulting from a dam outburst.

Tuesday, the Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority (TARDA) ascribed the rise in water levels to the persistent intense storms and augmented precipitation, which were a result of El Niño conditions and a favorable Indian Ocean Dipole.

It was mandated that the inhabitants of Garissa, Tana River, and Kitui Counties be relocated to higher rounds.

“TARDA has been closely analyzing the dam levels along the Tana River. The data reveals a significant increase in water levels, posing a heightened risk of flooding to the surrounding areas,” read part of a statement by TARDA.

“In light of these developments, we urge residents to remain vigilant and prepared. Communities in Garissa, Tana River, and Kitui Counties must heed the warnings issued by authorities to move to higher ground for safety.”

According to data obtained by TARDA on November 14, water levels at the Garissa bridge, situated along the Tana River, were recorded as 5.10 meters. This observation raises concerns regarding the possibility of the crisis degenerating further.

“Additionally, we advise individuals to take the necessary precautions to safeguard their families and property,” TARDA noted.

Additionally, the organization stated that it was collaborating closely with cross-sector stakeholders to resolve the immediate and long-term needs that have emerged as a result of the flood crisis in the Tana Delta.

“We will continue assessing the flood situation and providing essential advice on relocating to safer areas in collaboration with the relevant agencies.”

The TARDA notice is issued in light of the Kenya Met’s recent clarification regarding the El Nino rainfall that is presently being observed throughout the nation.

The initiation of precipitation was substantiated by the Kenya Meteorological Department and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on November 10, in contrast to the declaration put forth by President William Ruto.

“The matter is settled. El Nino, it is!” Gachagua stated.

Additionally, he declared that aircraft had been deployed by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to facilitate the distribution of KCSE examinations in inaccessible regions. Additionally, contingency emergency response teams were instructed to be prepared for life-threatening incidents.
