Africa’s Path to First World Status: Ruto Unveils Visionary Roadmap

President William Ruto explained on July 16 that the African continent is capable of achieving the stability and economic prosperity seen in established nations.

During the inaugural session of the 5th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU), the President stated that it was time for the continent to cast off the shackles of poverty.

Ruto, in delineating what needed to be done, remarked that African leadership must demonstrate urgency, focus, consistency, and resolve to manage and resolve existing challenges sustainably and develop robust instruments to anticipate and prevent future crises.

“It is because of this dedication that we are confident in our pursuit of sustainable development and shared prosperity, and we anticipate that Agenda 2063 is now firmly on track,” he remarked.

Agenda 2063 is a master plan and blueprint developed by the AU that establishes a framework for transforming Africa into a future global superpower.

Ruto stated that the implementation of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AFCTA) was one method to achieve Agenda 2063.

Ruto remarked that the AFCTA would facilitate unprecedented socioeconomic transformation.

He urged fellow Heads of State to support the free market by stating, “We must all be proud of this magnificent project, a historic achievement by and for ourselves, whose positive effects will reverberate throughout the world for generations.”

According to Ruto, AFCTA had established the largest free-trade area in the world, with 54 countries consenting to create a single market with a population of 1.4 billion and a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Ksh482 trillion.

Ruto predicts that once completely operational, the free trade area will lift 30 million people out of extreme poverty and increase incomes by 7 percent by 2035.

“This is the scope of what typical Pan-African collective action is capable of achieving, and we are just getting started,” he promised.

AFCTA is one of Agenda 2063’s thirteen flagship projects, which seeks to transform the continent into a global economic powerhouse and reduce its reliance on developed nations.

Ruto explained his vision for Africa as follows: “It is more important than ever that we marshal our collective consciousness to fulfill our fundamental generational mandate of introducing Africa as a new global power, ready and able to provide leadership towards a new industrial age that will simultaneously usher in an era of inclusive development, shared prosperity, and effective climate action.”
