African Leaders to Pocket Billions at Ruto’s Event

In partnership with the African Union, President William Ruto is hosting the Africa Climate Summit, an event at which Heads of State will receive billions of shillings to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The event will be conducted at Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) for two days beginning on September 4 and will be attended by over 20 African heads of state.

During the event, developed nations will pledge support to fight climate change, boost resilience, and assist those whose lives are most impacted.

The United Kingdom, which will pledge Ksh8 billion on Monday to support additional green initiatives in Africa, will lead the donations.

Andrew Mitchell, the British minister for development and Africa, acknowledges that the funds are necessary given that Africa bears the burden of climate change, despite being among the least responsible regions.

Mitchell stated that the United Kingdom is collaborating closely with African partners to combat climate change, enhance resilience, and assist those whose lives are most adversely affected.

The new Ksh8 billion will be used to fund financial initiatives that support environmental action and assist people in managing the effects of climate change on the African continent.

5 billion Kenyan shillings will be used to launch new projects in 15 African nations to assist women, communities at risk, and more than 400,000 farmers in building resilience against the effects of climate change.

In addition, Mitchell will reaffirm the UK’s commitment of Ksh1.8 trillion to climate finance over the next five years.

The funds will be used for initiatives in Africa, such as the Nairobi Railway City, a redevelopment of the city center designed by British architects using the most advanced green technology, and Ksh11.5 billion of UK investment.

The summit convened by Kenya seeks to recast the continent as a renewable energy powerhouse and solicit international financial assistance to realize its potential.

“Climate action is neither an issue of the Global North nor the Global South. It is a collective challenge that affects everyone. The President stated that the purpose of the summit would be to identify global, shared solutions.
