Adani Whistleblower Nelson Amenya Reveals How He Accessed Crucial Documents in Ksh338 Billion Airport Deal

Following President William Ruto’s decision to terminate the Ksh338 billion Adani contracts for the redevelopment of Kenyaโ€™s primary airport and power infrastructure, Nelson Amenya has shared details of his involvement as a whistleblower.

In an interview with BBC Africa, Amenya revealed that he received documents about the massive deal from reliable sources within government agencies.

The 30-year-old, who is currently studying in France, explained that initially, he didnโ€™t grasp the full implications of the deal on Kenyans. However, after closely reviewing the documents, he recognized the far-reaching consequences of the privately initiated agreement.

“When I first received the documents, I saw it as just another government deal, not fully understanding its scale or significance,” Amenya told BBC journalists.

He went on to say, โ€œThe individuals providing me with these documents were from credible government departments, and it was clear that the deal would harm Kenyaโ€™s economy.”

The whistleblower pointed out that the deal would have been detrimental to Kenyans, as it would drain taxpayer funds without offering significant benefits in return.

Amenya further revealed that if the Indian conglomerate failed to recover its investments in Kenya, the country would be forced to spend even more money.

โ€œThis was a major breach of public trust by the presidentโ€™s leadership, the Kenya Airports Authority, and the ministerโ€”they all betrayed the people,โ€ Amenya said.

He explained that aside from the dealโ€™s unusual conditions and lack of transparency, another major issue was the flagrant disregard for the law during the implementation process.

In March of this year, Kenya received a proposal from the Adani Group to take over the management of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for the next 30 years.

Three months later, the Ruto administration approved the necessary aviation policies, giving the Indian company the green light to proceed with the redevelopment of the airport.

The deal, which was made public in July, triggered widespread backlash from Kenyans, especially from aviation workers who protested, fearing job losses.

After months of controversy surrounding the agreement, President Ruto announced the cancellation of the deals during his State of the Nation address on November 21.
