Acquitted ‘Fake Cop’ Waiganjo Reveals Business Ties to Gachagua’s Family in Sh5.2 Billion Wealth Allegations

A controversial figure, recently acquitted after years of legal battles over charges of impersonating a senior police officer, has disclosed ties to a company co-owned by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s wife and son, which is mentioned in an impeachment motion in Parliament.

Joshua Karianjahi Waiganjo is requesting that a Nairobi court confirm the company had no involvement in the Sh5.2 billion wealth accumulation allegations, which are central to the impeachment proceedings against the Deputy President.

According to court documents, Mr. Waiganjo is the majority shareholder of Morani Manufacturers Limited, a company implicated in the impeachment motion submitted by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse on October 1.

In an affidavit presented to the National Assembly and filed in court, Mr. Waiganjo states he holds 600 shares in the company, which he registered in 2021.

He further asserts in the affidavit that he later sold 200 shares each to Mr. Gachagua’s wife, Dorcas Wanjiku Rigathi, and their son, Keith Ikinu Rigathi, all before Mr. Gachagua assumed the role of Deputy President in September 2022.

Mr. Waiganjo acknowledges the ownership information detailed in the National Assembly’s documents is correct, but denies any involvement of the company in receiving the alleged funds.

To have his name and the company removed from the impeachment proceedings against the Deputy President, Mr. Waiganjo claims that Morani Manufacturers Limited, since its registration on October 13, 2021, has completed only one transaction.

Legal representatives Sam Nyaberi, Danstan Omari, and Shadrack Wamboi, acting for Mr. Waiganjo, say the company’s only business activity was delivering 70kgs of pig feed, along with other supplies, to farmers for Sh132,000, with payments made by cheque.

“I am unaware of the Sh5.2 billion associated with Morani Manufacturers Limited. Since registering Morani Manufacturers Limited, I have only conducted one transaction,” Mr. Waiganjo states in the affidavit.

He adds that Kibwezi West MP referenced Morani Manufacturers Limited as one of the companies allegedly used by Mr. Gachagua for wealth accumulation in the impeachment motion’s seventh ground.

His legal team, who also filed to halt the ongoing public participation in the matter, is seeking to have the company removed from the parliamentary documents.

“As one of the directors of Morani Manufacturers Limited, registered under the Companies Act, 2015, I maintain that the company has been wrongfully included in Ground 7 of the Special Motion as one of the proxies involved in alleged money laundering, concealment of crime proceeds, and influence peddling by the Deputy President,” Mr. Waiganjo asserts.

Mr. Waiganjo notes he was the sole director at the time of the company’s registration, and to date, the company has a balance of Sh2,442 in its Absa Bank account.

In his affidavit, Mr. Waiganjo contends the company has been drawn into the impeachment process improperly.

He also argues that Mrs. Gachagua and her son have been unfairly implicated in the ruling coalition’s internal disputes and should not be included.
