Abel Kimutai: Man Accused of Orchestrating Abductions Speaks Out, Vows to Sue 2 X Users
Abel Kimutai, accused by social media users of masterminding recent abductions, has denied the claims, saying they have endangered his life. The allegations gained traction after former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua hinted at a connection during a press conference on December 27.
Gachaguaโs Shocking Claims
Without revealing much, Gachagua alleged that a man named “Abel” was leading a rogue unit conducting forced disappearances of government critics. The unit reportedly operates outside the country’s official security forces.
Social media users, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), identified Kimutai as the alleged leader, claiming he was a “fraud investigator” with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). They circulated his photos and contact information online.
Kimutai Denies Allegations
Kimutai, through his lawyer, admitted he previously worked for the DCI as a fraud investigator but resigned in 2022. He condemned the cyber-harassment and said it had put him at significant risk due to the public anger surrounding the abductions.
“This online harassment exposes my client to danger,” his lawyer stated. Kimutai has filed complaints against two X users, identified as Daniel Onyango and @DanChepta, accusing them of violating the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, Section 27, by spreading false and malicious information.

Call for Action
Kimutai demanded that the DCI take action against the two users for defamation and cyber harassment, emphasizing the severe consequences of such baseless accusations.
Gachagua Threatens to Expose Syndicate
Gachagua claimed that the abduction squad operates from a Nairobi building under the command of a senior figure, outside the control of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja. He warned that he would expose those behind the unit if it isnโt disbanded.
The National Police Service (NPS) has denied any involvement in extrajudicial actions, reiterating its commitment to lawful operations.
Missing Kenyans Spark Public Outrage
The spotlight on abductions follows the disappearance of at least five individuals since December 21, including bloggers Peter Muteti and Billy Mwangi, digital cartoonist Gideon Kibet, his brother Ronny Kiplagat, and journalism student Bernard Kivuli.
– Peter Muteti was taken from Uthiru, Nairobi, and Billy Mwangi from Embu County. Both were accused of posting offensive content against leaders.
– Gideon Kibet, a popular 23-year-old cartoonist known for satirical depictions of President William Ruto, was abducted on December 24, just days after his brother Ronny.
– Bernard Kivuli, a student journalist, disappeared in Ngong, Kajiado County.
These incidents have sparked fears over increasing crackdowns on dissenting voices in Kenya.
