Mombasa Engineering Student Fire Incident: ODM Reacts

On Saturday, August 19, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) responded to the incident in which a 28-year-old engineering graduate set himself on fire due to the excessive cost of living.

In a statement released by the party of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, ODM laid the blame squarely at the feet of President William Ruto, asserting that the Kenya Kwanza government had failed to address the plight of ordinary Kenyans who are struggling to make ends meet.

ODM’s remarks followed the self-immolation of a 28-year-old engineering graduate in Mombasa on Thursday, August 16, citing disillusionment with the high cost of living.

“The agony of losing a loved one due to the hollow promises of those in authority. The victim had aspirations, a vision, and dreams; all he needed to realize them was an enabling environment from the government, according to ODM.

The student sustained 50% burns and subsequently died in a Mombasa hospital.

“It is unfortunate that he took his own life. “We extend our deepest condolences to family and friends,” the Orange Democratic Movement said in a statement.

ODM stated that the demise of the young engineer illustrates the plight of numerous Kenyans who are struggling to survive. The party urged President William Ruto to address the rising cost of living immediately.

“This is a sad day for Kenya,” ODM declared. “A young man committed suicide because he could not afford to continue living. This is a direct consequence of the government’s failures.”

Ruto has not yet responded to the criticisms of the ODM. Nevertheless, he has previously stated that the government is doing everything possible to combat the excessive cost of living.

On Friday, August 17, Ruto told a gathering in Kasarani that the government is working to create jobs and opportunities for Kenyans.

Nonetheless, the Head of State noted that the high cost of living in Kenya is a significant concern. In recent months, the prices of food, fuel, and other necessities have increased consistently.

President Ruto stated that the government was working to resolve the thorny issues, including the state of the economy, which has made it difficult for many Kenyans to make ends meet.

Ruto also stated that the government has taken measures to address the high cost of living, including subsidizing fertilizer distribution.
