UDA Impeaches Godfrey Waiyaki as Kiambu Majority Leader

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has removed Godfrey Waiyaki, who serves as the MCA for the Juja Kalimoni ward, from his position as the Leader of the Majority in the Kiambu County Assembly.

Cleophas Malala, the Secretary-General of the United Democratic Alliance, announced on Friday, August 11, that the UDA party members in the County Assembly, who hold the majority, had cast their votes to remove Waiyaki from his position due to allegations of severe wrongdoing in his role.

More than three-fourths of the total members, which is over 75%, voted in favor of the motion for the removal of the majority leader. They alleged that Waiyaki failed to convey their issues to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi.

The number of signatures surpassed the minimum requirement of 37 votes specified in the county government’s Standing Order.

Malala states that the majority leader position will be assumed by Paul Macharia, the Limuru East MCA.

In a press conference held outside the County Assembly Offices on Friday, August 11th, the MCAs expressed that they no longer had faith in Waiyaki’s ability to lead, as conveyed during the briefing.

โ€œWe do not want a leader who is a troublemaker and we have no problem with our governor. We will continue to support him moving forward,โ€ one of the MCAs remarked.

Paul Macharia, the recently appointed majority leader, conveyed his belief in his capacity to guide the county assembly and effectively communicate their issues to the county government.

He additionally committed to incorporating a greater number of women and individuals with disabilities into the county’s activities.

โ€œI will be telling the governor what the leaders want and in the manner they want the message told. I will not embellish anything – I will tell him things straight on,โ€ the new majority leader noted.

Just about three months into his term as governor, Wamatangi faced disagreements with the county assembly members who were not in favor of his leadership.

The Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) alleged that the bursary committees were being established at the ward level without their participation. Additionally, they leveled accusations against the governor for disregarding their request for a meeting to address the well-being of the county.

In response to the allegations, Wamatangi stated that the MCAs were lacking patience with his leadership and he pledged to continue his work boldly and without apprehension.

As a result of this, a sequence of disputes arose as the MCAs declined fifty percent of Wamatangi’s selections for the Cabinet in November 2022.

Two months down the line, the governor decided to collaborate with the MCAs and engage in consultations whenever necessary.
