Kenya’s Trade Focus: Balancing Relations with Mozambique

The authorities have pledged to boost trade levels with Mozambique to establish a beneficial trade equilibrium for Kenya.

President William Ruto, currently on a two-day State Visit to Mozambique, expressed that both nations are actively investigating possibilities that would ensure a mutually beneficial result.

Ruto mentioned that the existing trade connections are skewed in favor of Mozambique, given that it’s experiencing higher sales to Kenya compared to Kenya’s export volume to Mozambique.

“In this burgeoning win-win relationship, Mozambique has the upper hand in trade balance terms, yet the opportunities before us take the form of a tide that will lift both our boats,” he said.

During the span of five years spanning from 2018 to 2022, Ruto explained that Kenya augmented its imports from Mozambique, going from a value of Sh3.2 billion to Sh5.2 billion. In contrast, Mozambique’s imports from Kenya only experienced a slight rise from Sh1.2 billion to Sh1.4 billion during that same timeframe.

He delivered the comments on Thursday in Maputo while being received by President Filipe Nyusi.

The pair of leaders observed the formalization of eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) designed to enhance the connections between their respective countries.

The collaboration pacts encompass Mutual Legal Assistance, Diplomatic Training, Public Service Training, Investment Promotion, Blue Economy, and the Reciprocal Acceptance of Driver’s Licenses.

President Ruto pledged to rapidly and completely execute the agreements, aiming to bring advantages to the populations of both countries.

“I am of the view that we must take advantage of the momentum generated in these engagements to expeditiously implement all the bilateral instruments that have been signed,” he said.

Ruto subsequently went to the Maputo Municipal Hall where he spoke to members and various government officials.

He received the Keys to the City of Maputo, the most prestigious honor bestowed upon a person.

The leader of the nation and First Lady Rachel Ruto also placed floral tributes at the Square of Heroes.

The President observed that there are numerous similarities between Maputo and coastal cities in Kenya. These resemblances encompass prospects in areas such as tourism, fishing, the blue economy, sea transportation, farming, production, as well as trade and commerce.

In addition to the First Lady, there were also other notable figures in attendance, including Cabinet Secretaries like Alfred Mutua (Foreign Affairs), Aden Duale (Defence), and Attorney General Justin Muturi, among others.
