Ichung’wah Replies to Azimio: Bipartisan Talks Set

Kimani Ichung’wah, the Majority Leader of the National Assembly, has verified that he has received an invitation from Azimio la Umoja for participation in the initial discussion of renewed bipartisan negotiations.

In a Thursday tweet, Ichung’wah conveyed that the Kenya Kwanza group intends to accept the invitation and engage in further conversations with Azimio regarding the negotiations.

“Received Kalonzo Musyoka. As Agreed, we will consult over a cup of tea to find a mutually agreeable date, time, and Venue,” he said.

On Thursday, Azimio requested the Kenya Kwanza group to be present at Serena Hotel on Monday at 11 am to initiate their discussions.

“We today extend an invitation to the Kenya Kwanza National Dialogue Team, the Leader of the Majority Party in the National Assembly, and the designated leader of the Kenya Kwanza delegation for the initial joint meeting of both parties at the Serena Hotel, Nairobi, on Monday, August 7, 2023, at 11 am,” read the statement in part.

The opposition alliance pointed out that due to time constraints, they have decided to establish the date and location themselves. They also emphasized their desire for the discussions to conclude by early September.

“We have taken this step because we believe time is of the essence. While a lot of hard work will be needed to resolve the issues at hand, we believe a speedy start and a time-bound program are necessary to put the nation at ease. Consequently, we believe this process should come to an end at the close of August 2023,” the statement added.

Azimio restated its desire for the committee to address topics such as the expenses associated with daily life, examination of the 2022 presidential election’s audit, reconstruction of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), strategies to hinder political party interventions, and matters concerning effective governance.
