Ruto Vows: Halting Protests as Successfully as BBI Reggae

President William Ruto has pledged to end the current spate of opposition protests just as he stopped the BBI reggae’.

Ruto stated that the government will not permit property destruction by demonstrators.

“In the same manner that we prayed and God stopped reggae, maandamano will cease to exist. Ruto stated that we will not permit the destruction of property.

The opposition has called for protests against the ‘severe’ economic policies of President Ruto, including the Finance Act of 2023.

Thursday, during the official inauguration of the Lamu County Commissioner’s Office in Mokowe, Ruto spoke in Lamu.

The President alluded the Building Bridges Initiative, which his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta had spearheaded.

Raila Odinga, the opposition leader, also supported the initiative, which was expected to modify the country’s governance structure.

The then-Vice President, Ruto, had criticized his employer and Raila for attempting to amend the constitution to create positions for themselves and their allies.

In addition, he asserted at the time that the BBI drive was part of a plot to prevent him from ascending to the presidency.

Later, the Supreme Court upheld the lower courts’ declarations that the proposed constitutional amendments were unconstitutional.

Uhuru defended the BBI proposals as a panacea for the country’s historical injustices and concerns regarding inclusion.

He argued that an expanded government leadership would accommodate all communities within the government.

However, on Thursday the President insisted that, similar to how his aggressive campaign turned the majority of Kenyans against the BBI proposals, he will earn public support.

The president has previously referred to the BBI proposals as a ‘big deception’ designed to deceive Kenyans.

“BBI was a nefarious organization. I cannot return it. Ruto stated at the time, “The Supreme Court ruled that the President cannot initiate this initiative.”
