HELB’s Must-Know Directive for Loan Missers!

Sunday, July 23, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) announced that students entering college in September 2023 had one week to apply for funding.

GossipA2Z was informed by a HELB representative that the window was only open to pupils who had previously applied and that it was closed by the board on Thursday, July 6.

This means that students who did not apply promptly will not have access to government funding during the 2023-2024 academic year.

“The first years applying for the loan will choose the subsequent application portal,” he explained, emphasizing that those who have not yet applied must wait.

This was the first time that first-year students applied using the subsequent option, which had previously been reserved for continuing students.

“Since we had already verified their information, once they receive funding they do not have to go through the entire process,” HELB explained, explaining why first-time applicants were opting for the second option.

“Students who have secured a university placement should submit their applications as soon as possible,” the official advised, noting that the portal would close on July 31.

Due to financial constraints, HELB had initially canceled allocations for the first years. At the time, continuing pupils were allocated funds and instructed to wait for distribution.

Students applying to North Coast Medical Training College have until Monday, July 31 to submit a funding application. This also applies to Tenwek Hospital College and Kenya School of Integrated Medicine (KSIM) students.

President William Ruto assured indigent students enrolling in college in September that they will receive full government funding on Saturday, July 22.

Speaking in Vihiga, he promised, “There have been funding difficulties for students as a result of debilitating student loan debt. I’ve met with Vice Chancellors and we’ve agreed on a new formula that will make it easier for students to obtain scholarships.”

The President added that pupils from affluent families will receive a scholarship covering 20-30% of their tuition.
