Raila’s Initiative Surpasses 8.5M Signatures in 2 Weeks
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has collected more than 8.5 million signatures on his recently launched website, Tumechoka.
The initiative, which was launched on Tuesday, July 11th, revealed that 8,516,337 Kenyans had signed up in support of removing President William Ruto from office.
The number is only 6,483,663 short of the 15 million signatures the opposition intends to collect in opposition to the current regime.
At the time of the launch, the former prime minister asserted that the cost of living had continued to rise since Ruto assumed power and that the introduction of a new tax schedule would drive more Kenyans below the poverty line.
Principals Martha Karua (Narc-Kenya), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Eugene Wamalwa (Democratic Action Party), and former governor of Murang’a Mwangi Wa Iria were among the other leaders who attended the initiative’s launch and subsequently signed the petition.

If the group collects 15 million signatures, it will be the first stage in the opposition’s plan to remove the President from office.
To successfully oust him, the team must legally register a petition with Parliament by the Constitution’s provision.
Public Protests
To force the government to reduce the cost of living, the opposition launched a series of public demonstrations in Kenya’s main cities.
Beginning on Wednesday of the previous week, protests dominated Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa for three days.
On Wednesday, July 26, 2023, Azimio la Umoja plans to conduct a second nationwide demonstration.
In a statement read by Mwangi wa Iria, Azimio la Umoja stated that protests will occur once per week.
“We will be there to ensure that this government is forced to heed the voices of the people. We are aware that they plan to detain and torture us, but we will not yield,” said Wa Iria.
