Kenyan MP Babu Owino Detained at Wang’uru Police Station Following JKIA Arrest

Fridah Ongili, the wife of Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, detailed on Wednesday, July 19, a frenzied 24-hour hunt for her husband that culminated in Kirinyaga, around 100 kilometers from Nairobi.

Following allegations that the legislator had been apprehended by investigators at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on the eve of Wednesday’s anti-government protests, the government issued a statement.

Fridah detailed the issue, saying that after a long search, she discovered her husband was being held at Wanguru Police Station in Mwea.

“Yesterday (Tuesday, July 18), at around 11:00 PM, he called me and told me that he was at the airport and had been detained by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) officers,” Fridah explained.

“His phone went off and has remained off since.” I’ve been looking for him. I began at DCI headquarters, then traveled to the airport before visiting Muthaiga, Gigiri, Kilimani, Kileleshwa, and Embakasi police stations.”

Fridah claimed that during her search, she learned that her husband was being held at the Wanguru Police Station in Kirinyaga County.
“He is here because a lady took me aside and told me so,” she explained.

She claimed that despite knowing where her spouse was, she was denied admission since the station was heavily guarded.
Fridah explained that her requests to be permitted to give her husband food and medicine were ignored.

In an emotional video appeal, she pleaded with Azimio Leader Raila Odinga to help her release, noting that Babu’s crime was fighting for Kenyans.

She also requested that the authorities allow her access to the MP, who was ill at the time of his imprisonment.

The police have yet to publish a comment regarding the politician’s arrest or whether any charges will be filed against him.

Azimio, in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 19, demanded for the immediate release of the MP and other Kenyans detained during anti-government protests.
