Mbai MP denies involvement in KPLC staff assault

Member of Parliament for Kitui East, Nimrod Mbai, was interrogated for hours on Monday by the anti-corruption agency regarding his behavior in public.

He denied assaulting an officer from Kenya Power and Lighting.”No, I have never committed an assault. Did you see me? He stated, “I am a pastor and I did not do that.”

Following the incident, he was summoned to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

And after nearly four hours, he walked out and stated that he was not responsible for the offense.

Mbai, who claims to be a pastor, stated that he was unaware of the in question incident and that the video footage had been altered.

Despite not expressing remorse, he defended his actions by stating that, given another chance, he would have handled the situation differently.

In the video that has gone viral on social media, the lawmaker can be seen insulting Kenya Power employees before repeatedly striking one of them.

The representative was speaking in front of the EACC offices, where he had been dispatched.

Twalib Mbarak, the chief executive officer of the EACC, condemned MP Mbai’s behavior and urged Kenyans to choose their leaders carefully.

Mbai is accused of striking a Kenya electricity engineer who was allegedly attempting to disconnect an illegal electricity line from the lawmaker’s Kitengela, Kajiado County, residence.

He will be charged with assault and misuse of a firearm. His pistol was also confiscated as a result of the incident.

The representative is a former security officer. When Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua was the government spokesman, he once served as his bodyguard.

He was also the former minister Francis Nyenze’s bodyguard.

Mbai was captured on camera on July 3, 2023, slapping a Kenya Power engineer and threatening to shoot him for disconnecting his power line.

During his fury, Mbai also reached for and tucked away his falling gun.

Wednesday, agitated KPLC employees mounted a peaceful protest from the company’s Epza offices to the Kitengela police station, condemning the incident.

The arrival of the electricians was precipitated by a complaint from the neighborhood that the electricity had become dim and defective.

Allegedly, an extensive unlawful connection to the MP’s residence was discovered.

Before assaulting the official, Mbai intimidated the officers by invoking the name of President William Ruto and alleging that the president had ordered that those with illegal connections be metered.

Wednesday, Mbai reported to the Kitengela police station before recording a statement with the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
The KPLC officers were able to disconnect his home’s electrical line.
