Kindiki Imposes 12-Hour Curfew on Azimio Protestors

Sunday, July 16th, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki ordered that all protests scheduled for Wednesday, July 19th, must occur within a 12-hour daytime window.

Confirming that Azimio and other disgruntled Kenyans were permitted to express their displeasure through picketing, the CS stated that picketing should be limited to the hours of twilight to dawn.

Kindiki explained at Kaanwa Catholic Church in Tharaka Nithi County that the directive was based on the Public Order Act and that his ministry would ensure its enforcement.

“The government respects and upholds the constitution and all of its provisions, including freedom of association and assembly, as well as the right to demonstrate, protest, and petition.

“Although the government has not prohibited public rallies and gatherings, the law permits them between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.,” he stated.

The secretary of the interior cautioned that his agreement with the opposition to conduct a rally should not be misconstrued as authorization to sabotage the economy and sow disorder.

Those found breaking the law during the protests will be dealt with by the law and with firmness and decisiveness.

The CS criticized retired politicians further, stating that they should enable their successors to carry out their mandate.

“They should not resort to blackmail, sabotage, and other unorthodox means to derail them,” he remarked.

Kindiki’s statement was made on the same day that Kipchumba Murkomen accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of funding the Azimio demonstrations.

Murkomen stated during a church service at AIPCA Bahati Cathedral that the opposition’s refusal to end protests was due to Uhuru’s initiative.

Raila Odinga announced on Friday, July 14, that the opposition would increase protests to three consecutive days beginning Wednesday, July 19.

“This is due to public demand,” he explained as he moved from one protest per week to two.
