Border Clash Claims Lives as Azimio Protests Ignite Kisumu-Kericho Tensions

On Thursday, July 13, two people were murdered and dozens were injured as a result of a deadly border dispute between Kisumu and Kericho counties that was sparked by the ongoing anti-government demonstrations.

The police stated that they are working to end the disorder and prevent it from worsening. The region is unstable and erupts whenever a political upheaval occurs in the nation.

Residents who were injured during the confrontations were hospitalized and received treatment at local facilities.

“We anticipate that it will not be as bad as it was yesterday, but we have sufficient police officers on hand and will support them if necessary,” he stated.

In a statement, the governor of Kericho, Erick Mutai, claimed that the confrontations were political and blamed politicians affiliated with Azimio.

“It is lamentable that political stalwarts associated with Azimio have politically incited to violence the various communities that had previously coexisted peacefully as brothers and sisters. Unfortunately, one person has died and five others have been injured.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the acts of anarchy and violence committed against innocent businesspeople, particularly those from communities that do not support demonstrations,” he asserted.

According to leaders allied with Azimio, the government-sponsored the clashes to derail their collective action.

Every time there is a political crisis, the Kericho-Kisumu border issue becomes a political hot potato, endangering the peace of the communities that reside along the border of the two counties.

Kericho County inhabitants bordering Kisumu have staked a claim to certain towns and cities, arguing that the boundaries should be redrawn to return certain towns and cities to Kericho County.

According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Sondu is located in Kisumu County, despite prior claims by Kericho.

Muhoroni, Chemelil, Kibos, Miwani, Koru, and Kopere are a few of the additional towns claimed by Kericho or Nandi.
