Opposition MP Found Dead in Car After Kidnapping: DRC Tragedy
This morning, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is in turmoil due to the tragic demise of a member of parliament.
MP Cherubin Okende, the spokesman for opposition politician Moise Katumbi’s Ensemble pour la République party, was discovered dead at the wheel of his vehicle on a main road in Kinshasa on Thursday. His corpse was riddled with bullet wounds. His family had reported his disappearance the day before.

The official letter from Judge Sylvain Lumu states that Okende’s tragic death occurred on the same day that he was invited to the Constitutional Court “for a working session” The working session was to “study and draft a report on the written declaration relating to your assets after you depart from the government.”

The former minister requested that the meeting with the justice of the Constitutional Court be postponed until Friday, July 14th.
Wednesday, well before he was kidnapped, Okende replied in a letter, “I would appreciate it if you would agree to the working session being held on Friday, July 14.”
The demise of the former minister occurs during a period of heightened political tension preceding the 20 December 2023 elections. The government has denounced “this abhorrent act.”
This morning, Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya stated that the government has “instructed all security services to conduct a comprehensive investigation” to cast light on this unacceptable act. In a secluded corner of Avenue des Poids Lourds on Thursday, July 13 in Kinshasa, the body of MP Okende was discovered in his vehicle.
