Police Spokesperson Addresses Chopper Crash: 15 Onboard, Clarifies Details

On Thursday, July 13, Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango refuted claims that a police helicopter plummeted in Meru.

In a phone interview with GossipA2Z, Onyango stated that the image circulating on social media was from an earlier accident in 2020.

“There is no wrecked police helicopter. What you are viewing is an outdated video sample. The helicopter collapsed in Meru on June 13, 2020. The registration number was 5Y-NPW,” she explained.

The Internet was rife with rumors that a helicopter en route to Marsabit crashed, murdering 10 of its 15 passengers.

The photo depicted the remnants of a Kenya Police Service-associated helicopter in white and navy blue. It impacted a Grevillea tree.

Kenyans. co. His follow-up investigation revealed that the AgustaWestland AW119 helicopter collapsed on a farm in Kaithe Kithoka, Meru County.

The aircraft transported two pilots and four passengers, including the Eastern Regional commissioner and his security detail. The party was en route to Moyale for a security meeting with government officials from the North Eastern region.

    Investigations’ Final Result

The Ministry of Transport, led at the time by CS James Macharia, concluded in February 2021 that a pilot’s lack of situational awareness caused the accident.

The Ministry concluded that the collision was an accident due to the extensive damage to the fuselage of the helicopter.

“The investigation determined that the probable cause of the accident was the pilot’s lack of situational awareness and his decision to continue the flight in deteriorating weather conditions, which resulted in spatial disorientation after inadvertent entry into instrument meteorological conditions and subsequent loss of helicopter control,” the report stated at the time.

Two individuals sustained severe injuries as a result of the incident.
