Nairobi Expressway Damage Bill: Kenyans Stuck With Ksh 705M Chinese Payment

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen disclosed on Thursday, July 13, that damages to the Nairobi Expressway will cost the Kenyan taxpayer Ksh705 million (USD 5 million).

During the inspection of the Mlolongo toll station, the CS explained that, per the contract between the operator and the government, the government must pay the operator within the next 28 days.

Recent protests that took place Wednesday along a 27-kilometer segment of the elevated road resulted in damages.
The CS claimed that those who organized and participated in the devastation of various equipment on the Expressway would reimburse the money.

Damage to the Nairobi Expressway as a result of the demonstrations could be as high as $5 million (705 million). According to the agreement, Kenyans are required to pay for the damages within 28 days,” he explained.

“We will ensure that those responsible for organizing the mass action personally pay for all damages caused.” For every shilling paid from the treasury, they will be required to reimburse the Kenyan people.”

Murkomen stated that 50 people had been arrested in connection with the Expressway damage as a first measure. He mentioned that the surveillance camera on the interstate proved useful during the investigation.

Flower pots and metallic guard railings were among the equipment destroyed during the Tuesday demonstrations.

“We want to assure investors that the government will do everything possible to bring all of the perpetrators to justice.

Those who intend to cause further harm will face the full force of the law. We will make it extremely painful for them, not only now but for the remainder of their lives, he said.

Murkomen added that they were still investigating damages to other government infrastructure before releasing a comprehensive report.

Following the damage, sections of the Expressway toll station were closed, with SGR, Syokimau, and Mlolongo being the most affected.

“Motorists on the Westlands-Mlolongo route must exit from JKIA, and those on the Mlolongo-Westlands route must safely access the Nairobi Expressway from the JKIA Toll Station,” motorists were instructed.
