Kenya’s Fear of ‘Kenya Kwanza’ No More – Sifuna

Senator Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi advised Kenya Kwanza to be prepared for Kenyans’ frustration with the regime.

Sifuna claimed that Kenyans are furious with the regime led by President William Ruto for ignoring their cries.

“Kenyans have lost their fear of this illegitimate government, and the day the public decides to lead their demonstrations, there will be no turning back,” Sifuna said in an interview on Thursday with Citizen TV.

The senator explained that despite Kenyans voicing their opinions on the contested Finance Bill 2023, Ruto proceeded to sign it.

“Kenyans are furious with this administration and refuse to listen. We have been deliberating the Finance Bill for two months, and Kenyans have expressed their opinions, but they have been ignored,” Sifuna said.

The ODM secretary general questioned further why the police purportedly opened fire on a peacefully protesting crowd in Kamukunji.

“What justification is there? “It can never be justified for police to open fire on a crowd gathered in Kamukunji,” he stated.

The Azimio coalition has rejected the Finance Act of 2023 in its entirety because it will overburden Kenyans.

Some of the 87 proposed amendments to the Finance Act of 2023 were ratified during late-night National Assembly debates last month.

The value-added tax on petroleum, which was raised from 8% to 16%, is the most significant of the new tax laws in the Act.

184 legislators, primarily from Kenya Kwanza, supported the bill, while 88 legislators from Azimio voted against the amendment.

The Finance Bill 2023 was signed by President William Ruto on June 26 after legislators approved tax measures intended to increase the Sh3.6 trillion budget for Financial Year 2023-24.

Nonetheless, the court stayed the implementation of the Act pending the outcome of the case.
