CCTV to Bust Nairobi Expressway Vandals: Govt’s Surveillance Crackdown

Wednesday, July 12th, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that his Ministry would use CCTV cameras and monitor media reports to identify and apprehend those responsible for vandalizing a section of the Nairobi Expressway during the Azimio protests.

In a statement, he ordered Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome and Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Amin Mohamed to investigate the incident and apprehend the perpetrators.

He issued a stern warning that the government would not tolerate lawlessness and that such conduct would be dealt with resolutely within the confines of the law in the future.

Murkomen stated, “We have requested that the Office of the Director of Criminal Investigations, through the Office of the Inspector General of Police, conduct exhaustive investigations and ensure that the perpetrators of such heinous acts, many of whom were captured on CCTV cameras and by the media, are apprehended and punished.”

He issued a directive requiring the organizers of demonstrations to guarantee that their participants would not disrupt economic activities, vandalize property, or incite acts of violence that would result in loss of life or property.

“As a nation, we cannot accept such acts of violence, lawlessness, and vandalism carried out under the guise of exercising political rights.

“In the future, organizers of demonstrations will be held personally liable for losses incurred through theft, vandalism, and the destruction of public infrastructure and property if their supporters commit similar acts of lawlessness,” he stated.

The expressway was damaged as a consequence of the Azimio coalition’s highly charged anti-government demonstrations.

Consequently, Moja Expressway, the elevated road’s operator, announced the indefinite suspension of Mlolongo, Syokimau, and Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) toll stations.

Before the chaos, Moja Expressway’s Public Relations Manager Jeanne May Ong’iyo disclosed to GossipA2Z that toll attendants operating at various locations along the stretch were evacuated safely.
She added that the police officers were able to disperse the crowd after engaging in running battles with the demonstrators.

“The situation is contained. The police officers have returned normalcy to the streets.”
She stated, “We cannot say exactly how long it will take for us to resume operations, but as soon as we do, we will issue a statement.”
