Ruto-Aligned Faction Calls for National Delegates’ Convention in Jubilee Party Power Struggle
A faction of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party supporting President William Ruto has gone for the kill in the battle for the soul of the former ruling party, calling for a National Delegates’ Convention (NDC) just days after its “coup” was upheld by the courts.
After the ruling of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, the interim secretary general of the Jubilee Party, Kanini Kega, announced a new date for the NDC.
The East African Legislative Assembly (Eala) member announced in a July 12 advertisement that the convention would be conducted at the Bomas of Kenya on August 7.
This comes less than two days after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal confirmed Mr. Kega as secretary general of the Jubilee Party, putting an end to the dispute between him and the other faction led by suspended secretary general Jeremiah Kioni.
Mr. Kega stated that several topics, including the review or ratification of the Jubilee Party’s policies, constitution, and rules and regulations, will be discussed at the convention.

The delegation will also receive the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) report on the party’s policies, amend or ratify proposed constitutional amendments, and review the audited accounts.
In addition to discussing the election of the party’s national officials, the meeting will consider and approve any additional business. In its decision, the tribunal upheld the expulsion of former national vice-chairman of the Jubilee Party David Murethe, and Mr. Kioni.
Disqualified leaders In addition, the court ruled that the May convention convened by the suspended leaders, at which former president Uhuru Kenyatta, who was also suspended as party leader, participated, was invalid.
The party designated the nominated representative Sabina Chege as interim leader before the election.
“It is hereby ordered that pending the hearing and determination of the motion and application filed herein between the parties, an interim injunction is hereby granted prohibiting all parties and/or their representatives jointly and severally from issuing any communication and/or making any public statement on behalf of the Jubilee Party,” states a portion of the PPDT’s ruling.
The Kega-led faction recently stated that it must withdraw from the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition, claiming that little was being done to strengthen the Jubilee Party on the ground.
He accused Mr. Kioni of neglecting to consult party members adequately and making unilateral decisions.
Raila Odinga, leader of the opposition party Azimio, stated recently that they would not tolerate government interference in their affairs, including attempts to exert control over the affiliated Jubilee Party.
