Police Seize Nairobi-Bound Bus Loaded with Illegal Firearms

On Tuesday, July 11, officers from the Tarbaj Police Station in Wajir County seized a firearm and ammunition from a bus traveling from Mandera to Nairobi.

According to the report lodged at the police station, law enforcement officers stopped the bus during a routine check along the Tarbaj Highway. However, they sensed that something was untoward when the driver and other suspects displayed suspicious behavior.

Initially, the police suspected that the bus was transporting illegal products, which prompted them to conduct a search after questioning the driver, tout, and other passengers.

The bus was taken to the Tarbaj Police Station, where a multi-agency team composed of the OCPD, SCCIO, CIPU Commander, and OCS conducted a comprehensive search, according to a portion of the report obtained by GossipA2Z.

A bus carrying 57 commuters was discovered to be transporting an AK-47 rifle with a fixed buttstock and no serial number, wrapped in a brown red mat, as well as four empty AK-47 rifle magazines.

Two-bolt head carriers without serial numbers and 201 rounds of 7.6239mm ammunition were also recovered.

Despite extensive questioning and additional interrogation of the passengers, the police were unable to identify the proprietor of the goods.

As a result, law enforcement took swift action and arrested multiple suspects, including the driver, conductor, mechanic, and two passengers, to assist with the investigation.

Following the discovery, the bus was detained at the police station to determine the gun’s proprietor and final destination.

“The evidence has been stored at the Tarbaj Police Station pending collection by the TPU Wajir detachment.” Case PBC, ATPU Wajir transaction,” stated a portion of the OB.

The Firearms Act states that no person may purchase, acquire, or possess a firearm or ammunition unless he has a valid firearm certificate.

A portion of the Act states, “No person shall remove or transport, or cause to be removed or transported, any firearm or ammunition from one place in Kenya to another, whether for export or otherwise, except under and by a removal permit issued by a licensing officer.”

In addition, anyone who obliterates the serial number of any firearm in his possession or is found in possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number without a reasonable excuse shall be guilty of an offense and subject to imprisonment for a term of not less than five years and not more than ten years.
