Media Criticized for Handling of Kenyan Priest’s Lodging Death

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) criticized Kenyan media agencies on Tuesday, July 11, for their coverage of the death of Ruai Catholic priest Joseph Kariuki, who died on Saturday, July 8, in a Murang’a County lodging.

In a statement signed by CEO David Omwoyo, the media monitor called certain media coverage unprofessional, insensitive, and in violation of the code of conduct.

The watchdog has called attention to the language used in the coverage.

Omwoyo explained that the statement follows an analysis of the mainstream and social media coverage, which went viral on Sunday and most of Monday.

Omwoyo remarked, “The use of sensational words and derogatory terms was insensitive and uncalled for, violating the dignity of the subjects involved and invading their privacy.”

An examination of the media coverage reveals inconsistencies in the reporting of the story’s facts, sensationalized headlines, and violations of the code of conduct regarding accuracy and fairness, integrity, accountability, obscenity, taste, and tone.

In addition, the council instructed the media outlet to provide balanced coverage and to respect the privacy of grieving individuals.

“In situations involving personal sorrow and shock, inquiries must be conducted with sensitivity and discretion. “Journalists must present the news with honesty, decency, and respect for both the audience and the subject of the news,” he advised.

“The Council advises that, as the media continues to cover the story, extreme care must be taken to protect the dignity of those involved and to adhere at all times to acceptable professional standards.”

Saturday, July 8, according to a police report, a Ruai resident became incapacitated at a lodging in Murang’a County. He had a female companion at the time who raised the alarm about his health.

The report states in part, “They rushed him to Kenol Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival while still in his black Toyota Harrier automobile.”
