Opiyo Wandayi’s Condition for Ruto’s Nyanza Tour
On Monday, July 10, the minority leader of the National Assembly, Opiyo Wandayi, imposed a condition on President William Ruto’s scheduled visit to the Nyanza region.
The representative from Ugunja demanded that Ruto issue an unqualified apology to the region for the tragic loss of life suffered by several residents during the recent opposition demonstrations.
The region is regarded as Raila Odinga’s political base, having overwhelmingly supported his fifth presidential bid. Additionally, the region has supported Raila in his previous political endeavors.
Ruto is expected to tour the region within the next month, and according to the member of parliament, the only way their supporters will listen to the Head of State is if he apologizes.
“I want you to question whoever intends to invite or host Ruto and his team on our land why they have allowed police officers to kill our sons. Before we can engage with anyone, we require an unreserved apology from Ruto himself regarding the police murders in Kisumu and Migori, he stated.

He added that it was regrettable that Ruto would visit the region just days after fatalities were reported in Kisumu and Migori Counties during the Saba Saba protests on Friday, July 7.
He noted that the protestors were blameless and were peacefully exercising their right to free speech by picketing.
Wandayi was incensed that in this day and age, it is unacceptable for the police to inflict terror on unarmed and peaceful Kenyans.
The lawmaker claimed that the leaders of Nyanza who supported the president were traitors who helped him advance outmoded politics in the name of development.
There are six counties in the region, including Siaya, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Migori, Kisii, and Nymiar.
During the demonstrations on Friday, July 7, a protester was purportedly shot and killed in Kisumu as residents and police officers engaged in running battles.
On Saturday, July 8, a second injured protestor from the Kisumu demonstrations passed away while receiving treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital.
During the protests, it was also alleged that a Migori student who was scheduled to enroll in university in September 2023 perished.
During an impromptu rally in Nairobi on Monday, July 10, Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition party Azimio, accused security personnel of causing disorder during the Sabasaba rallies.
