Raila’s Nyanza Meetings: Punishing Rebels as Ruto Plans Visit

Opposition Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, has launched a three-pronged strategy to prevent President William Ruto from poaching parliamentarians from his traditional stronghold.

Mr. Odinga has planned rallies to pit dissident MPs against their constituents and counter President Ruto’s aggressive inroads, particularly in Nyanza.

On July 23, the President is expected in the Homa Bay County constituencies of Suba South and Karachuonyo.

The following day, Dr. Ruto will visit the Gem and Bondo constituencies in Siaya County, where he will be hosted by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislators who have pledged to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The ODM rebels were adamant in an interview with GossipA2Z about “liberating our region and pushing for development projects.”

    Discipline commission

Mr. Odinga has instructed the Minority Leader of the National Assembly, Opiyo Wandayi, and the Minority Whip, Junet Mohamed, to evaluate the performance of ODM committee members to reshuffle them for more effective oversight of the Executive.

The purpose of the reorganization is to ensure that the minority Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition in the National Assembly and Senate presents a unified front on the floor and in committee meetings. The charges are also intended to cut the rebels’ wings.

“We are evaluating the committee participation of our members. Mr. Wandayi stated that the exercise will inform a reorganization to strengthen our teams for the effective execution of our mandate in Parliament.

Members who are otherwise occupied should not be required to serve on too many committees. Mr. Mohamed stated that he and his staff are working with their members to alter their approach to parliamentary business.

“We will ensure that our numbers on every issue and vote are current. “We are developing a new strategy to increase the effectiveness of our House representation,” he said.

The ODM Central Management Committee approved the expulsion of at least seven members last week. Mr. Odinga presided over the assembly. Since then, the matter has been referred to the ODM Disciplinary Committee for consideration.

Mr. Odinga’s latest strategy targets Gideon Ochanda (Rondo), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Mark Nyamita (Uriri), Paul Abuor (Rongo), Phelix Odiwuor alias Jalangro (Lang’ata), and Tom Ojienda, a senator from Kisumu.

In the approaching weeks, the party has scheduled at least four consultative meetings. To strengthen its support base, the opposition group intends to expand its activities to other areas of the country.

According to a provisional schedule, ODM plans grassroots activities for the following Saturday. The party’s leadership will meet with Kisumu East constituency ward officials.

Following this, a rally will be held at the Nyamasaria-Mowlem bus and Matatu terminal.

On August 5, the team will hold another meeting with Suna West officials before speaking at a rally at Masara Primary School.

The following day, the ODM heavy hitters will proceed to yet another rally in the Rangwe constituency. On August 12, party leaders will confer with delegates in Nyando before a rally in Othoo. It is unclear whether Mr. Odinga will participate in the rallies.

In Ugunja, the opposition party has convened meetings. Mr. Odinga attended these meetings. Also visited are the constituencies of Nyatike, Awendo, Gem, and Kasipul. Mr. Wandayi stated that the party’s grassroots mobilization would encompass the entire nation.

“We intend to revitalize our traditional foundations and explore new frontiers. The ultimate goal is to reestablish ODM as a formidable movement in preparation for the inevitable future political duels we will engage in with our allies, as stated by the Member of Parliament for Ugunja.

“We believe that a coalition’s strength is proportional to that of its constituent parties. Therefore, a powerful ODM is advantageous for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya and any future umbrella organization.”

The rebels, despite Mr. Odinga and his allies’ determined assault, appear unyielding. President Ruto conferred with them on Tuesday at State House in Nairobi to plan his trip to Nyanza.

Friday marked the second meeting with Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. The legislators and minister discussed some of the projects that President Ruto is anticipated to initiate.

“In preparation for the President’s trip to Nyanza, I conferred with local legislators and county assembly members. “Our discussions centered on the President’s commitment to expand road infrastructure as part of this administration’s efforts to improve trade, investment, and tourism, and to create jobs for the region’s residents,” Mr. Murkomen said later.

Evans Kidero, a former governor of Nairobi and one of the unconstitutional Chief Administrative Secretaries (CAS), stated that Nyanza is “slowly being liberated from political capture.”

Mr. Kidero, who ran unsuccessfully for governor of Homa Bay, added that the President’s visits “will be solely for development purposes.” During his rapprochement with President Uhuru Kenyatta, he accused Mr. Odinga of neglecting to advocate for development.

    President’s benevolence

“We anticipate that the President of Suba South will inaugurate the Mbita-Sindo-Magunga-Sori road on July 23. The road will facilitate the region’s expansion. This project will tremendously benefit tourism and fishing, he told GossipA2Z.

“We support the President in the interest of progress. Following his handshake with President Kenyatta on March 9, 2018, Raila should have pressed for the aforementioned items. Our people are moving away from the politics of cultism for the first time. Our people have begun to perceive that they are being freed.”

Mr. Odhiambo stated that Gem constituents will comprehend why he has chosen to collaborate with the Kenya Kwanza administration when President Ruto visits the constituency. He stated that the President would initiate multiple development initiatives in the region.

“The President’s goodwill is crucial for influencing development initiatives. Because our party leader chose to collaborate with President Uhuru Kenyatta, our region was able to complete several initiatives, he explained.

“How is recognizing our President treasonous? It is essential to offer development to the populace. The President will shortly be visiting my district. Having considered the country’s direction, I have decided to pursue reconciliation. Therefore, I will not participate in anti-government demonstrations.”

The Gem lawmaker added that his decision should not be interpreted as a betrayal of Mr. Odinga, insisting that he remains an ODM member.
