Martha Karua’s Response to Rumors of Split with Raila Odinga

Martha Karua, principal of Azimio, denied claims of an impending separation between herself and coalition leader Raila Odinga on July 9.

After Karua was conspicuously absent from the Friday, July 7, Kamukunji Rally and subsequent march to Central Park in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), rumors of bad blood began to circulate.

Raila Odinga was flanked by former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria instead of his running mate Karua, a move that signaled discord between the 2022 presidential candidate and his running mate.

In response to the allegations, Karua stated that she was not present at the protests in the capital because she was holding a rally in Kirinyaga at the same time.

The former representative for Gichugu reaffirmed that she initiated the collection of signatures to repeal the Finance Act 2023 by Odinga’s expectations.

This put to rest rumors that Raila was bringing Mwangi wa Iria on board to replace his erstwhile running mate.

During the Friday, July 7 mass rally, the Azimio Coalition adopted a new strategy to exert pressure on President William Ruto’s administration to reduce the cost of living.

In contrast to the past, when they only conducted a massive rally in Nairobi, coalition luminaries held simultaneous rallies across the country.

As Karua led anti-government demonstrations in Kirinyaga County, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka launched a signature collection campaign in Kathiani, Machakos County.

Likewise, Democratic Action Party โ€“ Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa and Roots party leader George Wajackoya led Western protests.

Odinga announced that nationwide demonstrations would take place on Wednesday, July 12.

Saturday, July 8th, Vice President Rigathi Gachagua dismissed the signature collection campaign, stating that it was a waste of time because it lacked constitutional support.

“There is no provision in our constitution that allows a serving president to be removed through signatures. The condition is that you win an election,” he explained.
