Kenya to Scrap Comorian Visa Requirements by 2023

President William Ruto has pledged that, by the end of 2023, Comorians holding valid travel documents will no longer require a visa to enter Kenya.

During a state visit to Comoros on Thursday to celebrate their 48th Independence Day, he made this statement, noting that the move will encourage the free movement of people between the two nations.

In his address, he stated, “I commit Kenya to eliminate the visa requirement for all persons holding valid travel documents issued by the Union of Comoros into Kenya by the end of 2023.”

Ruto stated that he is committed to holding talks on the education, healthcare, agriculture, and security sectors “to improve the lives of our citizens and build a better future for all of us” to further strengthen diplomatic ties between Kenya and Comoros.

Regarding education, Mr. Ruto stated that it is being considered to allow Comoran students to pursue higher education in Kenya at the same cost as Kenyan students.

To create opportunities, foster innovation, and construct sustainable economies that put the needs of citizens first, he added, it is necessary to tap into any shared potential.

“Let us embrace a spirit of solidarity and cooperation as we work together to address shared challenges like climate change, regional security, and economic development,” he said.

In addition, the Head of State lauded Comoros for ratifying the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) earlier this year, stating that the move will allow for the expansion of trade with Kenya.

The move, he added, will assist in enhancing economic diplomacy on the African continent.

“Because of this, I would also like to extend an invitation to the people of the Union of Comoros to join the East African Community, so that we may pursue and attain prosperity together.”
