Cult Leader’s Wife Granted Sh100,000 Personal Bond by Shanzu Court

The Shanzu Magistrate Court has granted Rhoda Maweu, the wife of alleged cult leader Paul Mackenzi, a personal bond of Sh100,000 and a surety bond of Sh500,000.

Since her capture on May 2, she had been in custody for 62 days.
Shanzu Senior Principal Magistrate Yusuf Shikanda ruled that the State had failed to prove why she, her husband, and 28 others were being held in connection with the Shakahola deaths.

When summoned, she will be required to report to any police station.

However, Mackenzi and sixteen other co-defendants who were arraigned between April 15 and May 2 will be held for an additional 30 days.

The court granted the State’s request to detain the suspects for sixty days. However, this will not occur until June 2.

In addition, the court ruled that the eleven additional suspects, who were initially arraigned on June 3, would be held for no more than three days.

After thirty days in police and prison custody, the State would have to demonstrate why they should continue to be held.

May 2 began with the arraignment of Mackenzie, his wife, and sixteen others.

The twelve additional defendants were arraigned on June 2, one month later.
The court has determined that the first group of 18 defendants, excluding Mackenzie’s wife, will remain in custody for an additional 30 days.

The state had requested sixty days. The court granted them sixty days, commencing on June 2.

The additional 12 defendants, who were initially arraigned on June 2 (one has since passed away, leaving 11), will be held for an additional three days.

The State must demonstrate why it should continue to hold them.
