Raila Calls Friday Protests Against Ruto’s Tax Plan

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio party, has called for a day of protests on Friday, July 7 to express opposition to President William Ruto’s newly announced tax measures.

Speaking at the homecoming ceremony of the newly elected Luo Council of Elders chairman in Kisumu on Sunday, Odinga urged Kenyans to demonstrate their disapproval of what he described as an executive takeover of parliament on Friday by turning out in large numbers.

The Azimio leaders characterized the Finance Act of 2023 as oppressive and detrimental to Kenyans because it would increase the cost of living.

“Every member of parliament you voted for has been compromised; they no longer listen to what the mwananchi have to say; instead, they dance to the tune of President Ruto.” It appears that the government wants to impose these taxes on us by force, which is why we say no taxation without representation,” he said.

“I want you to take care of those leaders down here; I will deal with the leadership at the top. Please listen to me; on Friday, July 7th, I want you all to appear; will you all appear?”

Jared Okello, a lawmaker from Nyando, chastised Kenya Kwanza leaders for attacking the judiciary in response to Friday’s court order against the implementation of the new finance law.

“Just as Baba respected the court’s decision when it ruled against us in the presidential petition, we want them to respect the courts and let them do their job. We will not permit anyone to interfere with court decisions in this country,” said Okello.

Despite the court order issued on Friday, the energy regulatory agency EPRA proceeded with the introduction of new fuel prices the same evening, a move that opposition leaders condemned as a violation of the court’s authority.
