6.3 Million Kenyans File Tax Returns by Deadline: KRA Reveals

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has now disclosed that the number of Kenyans who submitted their tax returns by the midnight deadline on June 30, 2023, was 6.3 million.

This number represents a 14.5 percent increase from the 2021 income year, when only 5.5 million Kenyans met the deadline to file their taxes, according to a statement that the tax collector issued to newsrooms on Saturday.

This increase was attributed by the state agency to several different factors, some of which include the early release of P9 forms by employers, taxpayers taking personal initiative to comply with their tax obligations, and the KRA’s service support framework.

The implementation of off-site filing support thanks to a collaboration between the KRA and various stakeholders, including government agencies, community leaders, business member organizations, religious institutions, and academic institutions, is also credited with contributing to the rise in the number of tax returns filed.

According to the statement, “KRA reminds the public that failure to file income tax returns by the due date which is 30th June attracts a penalty of Ksh.2,000 or 5% of the tax due whichever is higher for Individuals,” and “KRA reminds the public that failure to file income tax returns by the due date which is 30th June attracts a penalty of Ksh.20,000 or 5% of the tax due whichever is higher for Nonindividuals.”

“The KRA would like to thank all of the taxpayers who came out in such large numbers to fulfill their tax obligations. This is a genuine display of patriotism, and the coming fiscal year should make greater use of it.

In addition, the tax agency mentioned that its service and contact centers will keep operating during regular business hours to facilitate taxpayers who might want to file their returns at some point.
