Close Call: Kidero’s Driver and Bodyguard Injured in Londiani Crash

On Friday, June 30, the Londiani accident that claimed over 50 lives also injured aides of Evans Kidero, the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) for Investments, Trade, and Industry.

In a statement released by his Communication Officer Jack Nduri, the ex-governor disclosed that his driver and bodyguard were traveling in his car when they were struck and injured by the out-of-control trailer at Londiani Junction.

Nduri reported that the two aides were in a black Range Rover with the license plate number KBS 786R when it was struck from behind and the side.

Part of Kidero’s statement read, “My driver and Sammy soldier (the bodyguard) were among the accident victims at Londiani, where more than 50 people died and a similar number are in critical condition at various hospitals in Rift Valley.”

On June 30, 2023, the SUV was one of several vehicles struck when a trailer lost control and collided with several automobiles at the Londiani junction along the Kericho-Nakuru highway.

Kidero stated that his driver, Christiano, and bodyguard, Sammy Wuod Asumbi, were involved in the accident, but he expressed relief that both men survived the tragedy.

“We give thanks to God for the lives of Christiano the driver and Wuod Asumbi, a Sammy soldier. Kiddo added, “We continue to pray that God will continue to watch over the safety of our roads.”

He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims who perished in the accident and pledged his support to the victims, including his staff members.

In a statement distributed by his aide, Kidero expressed his heartfelt condolences and prayers for the families who lost loved ones.

According to preliminary reports, the truck lost control at the Londiani junction and ran over several people, including pedestrians and roadside vendors. Additionally, the truck ran over businesses and parked vehicles along the roadway.

The accident was confirmed by Londiani OCPD Agnes Kunga on the evening of June 30. She stated that over sixty injured victims were rushed to hospitals in Londiani, Kericho, and Nakuru during a heavy downpour.

Governor Eric Mutai of Kericho stated that the county had mobilized ambulances and prepared all medical facilities for use. Saturday, July 1st, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visited the accident site and urged drivers to exercise caution on the road.

“The accident serves as a reminder of the need for road safety. We urge drivers to drive cautiously and adhere to traffic regulations. Additionally, we pray for the victims’ speedy recovery,” Murkomen stated.
