Kenyatta Secures Ksh305 Million Aid for Peace Mission in DRC
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta received Ksh305 million in financial assistance from two heads of state to support his efforts to restore peace in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Uhuru received the funds as the facilitator of the East African Community (EAC), Nairobi-led process to find a permanent solution to the conflict in Eastern DRC.
Angolan President Joo Manuel Goncalves Lourenco and his Senegalese counterpart Macky Sall contributed Ksh305 million (1 million Euro each) to support the initiative.
During the quadripartite summit on the coordination and harmonization of peace initiatives in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the funds were transferred.
“EAC applauds the Republics of Angola and Senegal for their financial support of 1 million Euro each to the EAC-led Nairobi Process,” the statement read in part.
During his address to the summit, Uhuru praised the EAC bloc for its efforts to restore peace and stability to the eastern DRC.

He also acknowledged the support of other political actors for the DRC peace mission, which he argued had bolstered the resolution of the conflict.
Before flying to Angola for that summit, Uhuru met with the M-23 group’s chairman and senior political and military leaders to restore peace in Eastern DRC.
The leaders of M-23 agreed to continue their withdrawal in an orderly manner and to observe a strict cease-fire. In addition, they agreed to work with the East African Regional Force (EARF) to promote peace and unity.
“The leaders of the M-23 urged President Kenyatta to assist in ensuring safety in the DRC and the protection of citizen rights, and that all local and foreign armed groups fighting in eastern DRC lay down their arms, cease any fighting or attacks on the M-23, and seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict,” the East African Community said.
After President William Ruto seconded him during his inauguration ceremony in September 2022, Uhuru retained his position.
