Cloned Range Rover Worth Ksh25 Million Destroyed by KEBS
Thursday, June 29, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) turned over a cloned Range Rover to the government for destruction. The high-end vehicle, valued at Ksh25 million, was suspected of being cloned to conceal its actual release year.
According to the regulator, the vehicle was apprehended in Mombasa during a routine inspection.
In a statement, the government agency drew attention to the increased instances of smuggled vehicles. Noting that the SUV resembled the 2021 Range Rover four-by-four.
KEBS stated, “The Range Rover with chassis number SALGA2AEXLA400687 was apprehended during a routine inspection at the Regional Logistics Centre in Mombasa.”
As a result of the car’s failure to comply with KEBS’s standard operating procedures. The government has the option of destroying or returning the vehicle.
A new Range Rover intercepted costs more than Ksh25 million, whereas a used model costs between Ksh7 million and Ksh15 million.
“This expensive vehicle entered the country illegally. Esther Ngari, the acting managing director of KEBS, stated that our inspection agencies collaborated with various stakeholders to intercept it.

“We have put in place procedures to prevent fraudulent activity,” she continued.
Another KEBS representative lamented that many Kenyans were losing money due to the importation of counterfeit automobiles. He noted that the suspects obtained information about the automobiles by attending auctions in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Thus, he cautioned Kenyans against purchasing automobiles from unlicensed dealers. In addition, he urged them to adhere to stipulated inspection procedures to avoid purchasing vehicles that do not meet Kenyan standards.
On June 11th, KEBS reported that a former governor was a victim of a group that stole a Range Rover from the United Kingdom. The governor who shall remain nameless purchased a Range Rover Vogue from Dubai for Ksh9.9 million.
The high-end vehicle was reportedly stolen in the United Kingdom and shipped to Dubai before the governor purchased it.
“The Chassis number displayed on this vehicle is for a 2020 model; however, the vehicle you possess is a 2019 model and not a 2020 model.”
“The identity labels are counterfeit, but the engine number is authentic.” The vehicle was reported stolen in the United Kingdom on August 21, 2022, according to the report.
