Khalwale Challenges Tax Boycott, Urges Treasury to Review Opposition Leaders’ Pension

Wednesday, June 28th, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale responded to Azimio la Umoja’s call to boycott taxes by pressuring the Treasury to reconsider the pension payment plans for opposition leaders.

Khalwale questioned in a statement Azimio’s desire to oppose the payment of taxes from which they receive their annual pension.

He indicated that former President Uhuru Kenyatta will receive Ksh440 million, Azimio leader Raila Odinga will receive Ksh74.16 million, and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka will receive Ksh70.21 million.

He added that the ripple effect caused by Raila’s call for a tax remissions boycott will result in Treasury either reducing or ceasing to pay the principals of Azimio their pensions.

“Leaders of Azimio oppose the payment of taxes. These are the millions they will receive as pension from the taxes collected this year, he stated as he listed the major recipients.

    Perks

According to the approved budget plan for the fiscal year 2023/24, Uhuru will receive Ksh440 million in benefits as well as housing, fuel, and entertainment allowances.

This includes Ksh176 million for Uhuru’s domestic and international travel. The budget for furniture purchases totals Ksh55 million.

A total of Ksh25 million will be spent on fuel for Uhuru’s fleet of vehicles, and an average of Ksh18.8 million will be used to maintain the specified vehicles.

In contrast, Kalonzo will receive Ksh70.21 million, an increase from the initial Ksh59.23 million he received in the previous fiscal year. However, Raila’s benefits decreased from Ksh78.69 million to Ksh74.16 million.

    Do not pay taxes

Raila urged Kenyans to boycott taxes imposed by the Kenya Kwanza regime until the repeal of the Finance Act of 2023.

He encouraged Kenyans to carpool and offer rides to one another to save money on fuel. The leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) also urged the public to reduce non-essential travel to avoid incurring additional costs.

In an act of civil disobedience, he also urged matatu owners to double their carrying capacity while maintaining the same fares.

In solidarity with Azimio’s call, the former prime minister urged police officers to allow matatu owners to transport more passengers than allowed.

Raila also instructed Kenyans to obstruct the motorcades of President Ruto and senior government officials as an act of solidarity against the current regime.

On July 7, 2023, the opposition will unveil a plan for nationwide civil disobedience.
