Raila Odinga Urges Tax Boycott against Ruto’s Regime

Odinga, the leader of Azimio la Umoja, issued a call on Tuesday, June 27, for Kenyans to boycott the taxes imposed by the administration of President William Ruto until the repeal of the Finance Act 2023.

Raila gave his supporters seven directives for Kenyans to follow during his speech at the Kamukunji grounds in Nairobi. The purpose of this act of civil disobedience was to deny the ruling party the revenue generation it so desperately needs to run its operations.

The Act that Deputy President William Ruto approved on Monday includes a whole host of new taxes and levies, which will result in lower salaries for formal employees.

    Carpool

Raila urged the people of Kenya to cut down on their consumption of fuel by carpooling whenever it was possible and helping each other out by giving rides.

He advised the general public to limit their travel to only what was necessary to avoid incurring any additional costs. Raila believes that this will prevent the government from having the opportunity to collect tax revenue.

    Amble to work

In addition, the head of the opposition group made a plea to all businesses to permit their workers the opportunity to walk to and from work as part of an act of civil disobedience.

    Matatu Owners

The head of the opposition party called on the owners of matatus to travel with twice as many passengers as they normally would.

In allusion to this fact, he mentioned that they ought to keep the fares at the same rates to avoid subjecting Kenyans to increased expenditures.

In addition to this, he emphasized that proprietors of matatus should continue tax boycotts while also adhering to the safety regulations on the roads.

    Officers of the Law

The former Prime Minister issued a plea to police officers stationed across the country, asking them to support his call by allowing matatus to carry more people than their maximum capacity so that Kenyans can unite in opposition to the government.

    VAT Taxes

He urged companies to turn off their electronic tax registers or find another way to avoid them, and at the same time, they should submit zero returns for their Value-Added Taxes (VAT). In addition to this, he strongly suggested that proprietors of businesses provide their customers with special deals and discounts to help them cope with the rising cost of living.

    Employers

Raila instructed business owners to disobey the Finance Act 2023’s mandate that they take punitive deductions from their employee’s wages and instead stick with the tax system that had been in place before the enactment of the Finance Act 2023.

Raila alleged that the funds would be misappropriated by the Kenya Kwanza administration as part of a larger scheme to commit graft.

    Ruto Motorcade

Raila issued instructions to the people of Kenya, telling them to stop giving the motorcades of President Ruto and his government the right of way. This was another act of defiance on Raila’s part.

He encouraged drivers to show their support by obstructing the passage of other vehicles on the roads, except emergency vehicles.

“Let us refuse to give the right of way to motorcades. They are free to activate the sirens whenever they see fit, but everyone is required to comply with the directive,” he stated.
