Wajir MP Claims US Partially Responsible for Kenyan Terror Attacks

Wajir Upper Monday, June 26th, Member of Parliament (MP) Ibrahim Abdi Saney asserted that the United States was partially responsible for the recent increase in terrorist attacks in Kenya.

In an interview with K24, Saney criticized the United States for not classifying Al Shabaab as a terrorist organization a day after the group was suspected of killing five people in Salama Village, Lamu County.

He further cautioned the government led by President William Ruto to proceed with caution when dealing with Somalia, arguing that the war-torn nation was a major trading partner.

“As much as we blame our government, why is Al Shabaab not profiled as a terrorist organization by the United States?” We have repeatedly witnessed them fail to do so,” he stated.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA)-elected representative made the statement a day after suspected terrorists raided a village in Lamu County, killing five people and destroying several homes.

Saney explained that with the assistance of the United States, Kenya had a chance to eradicate the terrorist organization that had plagued the country for decades.

The lawmaker further argued that Kenya had demonstrated that it possessed the capability and determination to combat extremists and required only the support of global powers.

He reiterated that Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki’s decision to reopen the Kenya-Somalia border was timely.

“I believe the decision to open those borders was a good one, and Kenyans living near the border have risen to the challenge,” he said.

Specifically, he stated that constituents from his district were committed to ensuring that Al Shabaab does not use the open border to enter Kenya.

“We must be patient to reap benefits from Somalia because the country has untapped potential,” he added.

Two days prior, President William Ruto, who is also the leader of the ruling UDA party, insisted that opening the border with Somalia was a prudent move.

In a previous interview with GossipA2Z, George Musamali, a security expert, argued that politicians should stop seeking support from the United States.

He explained that while Washington can provide logistical support, Kenya must develop its security intelligence collection methods.

“Do we expect the United States to send ground troops to help us fight?” We can only hope for drones and other sophisticated weapons to combat and destroy terrorist cells, he said.
